Raise your hand if your skin is drier than usual this winter. It’s been a harsh one for sure and it seems as though winter just won’t end. My skin has been crying out for moisture and everything I put on it sinks in almost instantly.
Drinking plenty of good old H2O is one of the best things you can do to hydrate your skin, but high-quality, naturally-based skin care products can have a big impact too. Look for products made with plant-based ingredients that actually absorb into skin and nourish it instead of coating it and clogging pores like petroleum based ingredients often do. And of course, you want to use products that are free of toxic chemicals like parabens 1,4-dioxane, artificial fragrances and other nasties. Have a peek at some of the wonderful, natural and organic products I’ve been treating my skin to this winter. I recommend them all!
Have you ever washed your face with oil? It may seem strange but oil is actually really effective at dissolving impurities and removing makeup. The Stem Cellular Cleansing Oil from Juice Beauty is an oil-based cleanser made for all skin types. It feels very light going on and it rinses off easily, leaving my face feeling hydrated, not stripped like some cleansers. So hydrated in fact, that if I use it at night, I only need a very light moisturizer afterward. Bonus: made with many certified organic ingredients.
Exfoliating your skin to remove dead skin cells is especially important in the dry, winter months. But some scrubs are too harsh, leaving your face feeling even drier than before you started. The Brightening Facial Scrub from Acure is a very gentle scrub that exfoliates naturally with organic sea kelp. French green clay helps remove impurities and cutting edge plant-based ingredients like Chlorella Growth Factor and Argan Stem Cells stimulate new cell growth. Personally, I love how healthy my skin feels after I use it. Nice light minty scent too.
A hydrating mask is a great way to infuse your skin with moisture and Jurlique’s Herbal Recovery Antioxidant Gel Mask is one of my favs. Instead of the typical Halloween-worthy, clay-based facial mask, this mask goes on as a clear gel. The formula contains botanicals to hydrate the skin along with Vitamin E to protect skin against environmental damage. Think of it as a 10 minute mini-spa for your face! (Contains many certified biodynamic ingredients.)
If your skin gets red and irritated in the cold, winter months, you might want to give Naturopathica’s Vitamin C15 Wrinkle Repair Serum a try. Made with Oat Beta Glucan and Hyaluronic Acid, this serum has been clinically proven to reduce redness and inflammation. Plus the high concentration of Vitamin C helps combat fine lines and wrinkles. I’m all for that! As always, I’m a fan of Naturopathica’s trademark blue glass bottles and subtle herbal scents.
There’s nothing better for getting peak moisture into my dry, winter (OK, aging too) skin, then slathering it with oil. But oil can be messy and a little bit goes a long way. New Wild Rose Smoothing Facial Capsules from Weleda deliver the perfect dose of oil in tiny capsules for individual application. Your skin will drink up the antioxidant-rich Rosehip Seed oil and you’ll love the light scent from the Rosa Damascena flower. For intensive treatment, use every night for 4 weeks or for regular care, 1-2 times per week. 100% natural and 90% certified organic ingredients.
When you want to really treat your skin right, Miessense is the way to go. I’ve tried a few products from this Australia-based company (sold by independent distributors like Ely Organics who kindly sent me the sample) over the years, and loved every one of them. My latest favorite is the Ambrosia Essence Skin Perfector. Made with only 8 ingredients including the much revered tamanu nut oil, Ambrosia Essence is a potent skin healer. Great for blemishes and burns or as a healing boost to any skincare routine. Just a few drops after cleansing and before your regular moisturizer is all you need. The natural, earthy scent with just a hint of patchouli is warm and comforting. I’m addicted! Certified USDA organic.
