Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, making it a better choice for both your skin and the environment. To earn organic certifications like GOTS, the fabric must also be processed without many of the chemicals commonly used in conventional textile manufacturing, including formaldehyde finishes, chlorine bleach, and certain toxic dyes.

Organic cotton is my favorite material for non-toxic underwear because it’s breathable, durable, and grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. GOTS-certified organic cotton must also meet strict standards for safer processing and environmentally responsible manufacturing.

Hemp

Hemp is one of the most sustainable fibers available. It requires very little water to grow, naturally resists pests, and creates underwear that’s breathable, durable, and naturally moisture-wicking. Because there isn’t currently a GOTS certification for hemp fiber itself, look for brands that pair hemp with certified organic cotton.

Bamboo

Bamboo is one of the softest, most comfortable fabrics you can choose for underwear, which is why it’s become so popular in recent years. Bamboo grows quickly, requires less water than conventional cotton, and is naturally grown without pesticides, making it a more sustainable choice.

One thing to know is that bamboo fabric cannot currently be certified organic because of the manufacturing process used to turn the bamboo plant into fiber. Instead, look for brands that use responsibly sourced bamboo and third-party certifications like OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, which verifies that the finished fabric has been tested for harmful substances.

Why Many People Avoid Polyester & Nylon

Polyester and nylon are petroleum-based synthetic fibers that aren’t as breathable as natural fabrics like organic cotton or hemp. Some people also choose to limit synthetic fabrics because they can shed microplastics during washing. While synthetic fibers are common in athletic and performance clothing, choosing natural materials for everyday underwear is a simple way to reduce your reliance on plastics while enjoying better breathability and comfort.

What Certifications Should You Look For?

When shopping for non-toxic underwear, the brand’s claims are only part of the story. The most trustworthy companies back up their sustainability and safety claims with independent third-party certifications. Here are the ones I look for most often.

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is considered the gold standard for organic textiles. It verifies not only that the cotton is organically grown, but also that the entire manufacturing process meets strict environmental and social standards.

Products carrying the GOTS Organic label must contain at least 95% certified organic fibers and cannot be processed with chlorine bleach, formaldehyde, many toxic dyes, or other harmful chemicals.

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 focuses on the finished product rather than the farming process. Every component—from the fabric and thread to the elastic and dyes—is tested for a long list of harmful substances, including formaldehyde, azo dyes, pesticides, phthalates, and heavy metals.

It’s one of the best certifications to look for if your primary concern is chemical safety.

Fair Trade Certified™

Fair Trade Certified helps ensure that workers receive fair wages, work in safe conditions, and benefit from responsible labor practices. While it doesn’t certify the fabric itself, it provides valuable assurance that the people making your clothing are treated fairly.

Ecocert

Because bamboo fiber currently isn’t eligible for GOTS certification, you’ll often see Ecocert certification on bamboo products. Ecocert verifies sustainable farming and responsible production practices and is one of the most respected organic certification organizations in the world.
