Review: Oceanly Makeup for Plastic-Free, Minimalist Beauty
In this review of ATTITUDE’s Oceanly makeup, I’m sharing the benefits of their solid, plastic-free makeup and my thoughts on the individual makeup products I’ve tried from this beloved Canadian brand.

The makeup industry is notorious for using lots of plastic and hard-to-recycle packaging. So it’s refreshing to find a brand like Oceanly that offers all the traditional makeup products you want but in zero waste, plastic-free packaging!
Today we’re doing a deep dive into the Oceanly brand and why you might want to consider trying some of their sustainable cosmetics products.

Benefits of Plastic Free Makeup
For those of us trying hard to reduce plastic in the products we use, makeup can be a sticking point. Most products involve plastic compacts, tubes, pumps, wands and bottles, many of which are not possible to recycle.
Plastic free makeup packages are much simpler and eliminate all those extra parts. And a well made cardboard container is biodegradable at the end of it’s useful life.

What Makes Oceanly Unique
Oceanly is a brand within the Canadian company ATTITUDE, that is well known for their non-toxic and sustainable products. You’ll find ATTITUDE recommended in many of my product roundups from cleaning products, to shampoos to body lotions.
Oceanly is their range of plastic-free products, including the makeup that we’re reviewing here, as well as a facial care range.
Here are some of the unique aspects of Oceanly products:
- plastic-free packaging made from FSC-certified biodegradable cardboard, with a biodegradable protective layer and printed with biodegradable ink.
- skincare forward formulas that include actives such as phytoglycogen (known to be more hydrating than hyaluronic acid over the long term), vegan collagen and algae extract.
- solid products that are perfect for travel (no restrictions like with liquid products)
- EWG Verified – the highest certification from the Environmental Working Group, ensuring clean ingredients
- PETA certified vegan and cruelty free
- fragrance-free and suitable for most skin types

Review of Oceanly Makeup Products
Lucky me – I’ve had the chance to try many of the products in the Oceanly collection! Most were gifted to me by the brand but I’ve repurchased the blush on my own because it’s my favorite!
Oceanly Blush
- My thoughts: I personally LOVE this blush and use it almost every day! It’s creamy and smooth and you can apply it with your fingers, a brush or a sponge.
- Pros: Just the right amount of pigment. The stick lasts a really long time.
- Drawbacks: The package can get a bit messy looking by the time you finish the stick.
- Colors: Happy Berry (the one I use!), Silky Pink, Rose, Corail, Ginger
- Cost: $29.95 for 0.3-oz
Oceanly Foundation
- My thoughts: The product is a bit dry and it’s hard to rub in. To be honest, it’s not my favorite.
- Pros: If you prefer a drier formula, you might like this foundation stick. I found it helps to use a facial oil or oil-based moisturizer before the foundation to help it blend in better.
- Drawbacks: It only provides light coverage and with only 6 colors, it might be harder to match your skin
- Colors: Cream, Nude (the one I have), Dune, Caramel, Moka, Espresso
- Cost: $34.95 for 0.42-oz
Oceanly Tinted Oil
- My thoughts: This one feels smoother and richer than the foundation. I like that it adds a light tint and a bit of glow to my skin without heavy coverage.
- Pros: It adds a layer of skincare with a light coverage (a no makeup look) and can replace foundation for some people.
- Drawbacks: Some might see this as an unnecessary step in your skincare and makeup routine.
- Colors: Nude (the one I have), Dune, Caramel, Espresso
- Cost: $34.95 for 0.42-oz

Oceanly Bronzer
- My thoughts: As a makeup minimalist, I don’t use bronzer very often, but I do think it’s a nice product and I’ll break it out for a fancy night out!
- Pros: It’s a creamy product that is easy to blend with a brush or sponge.
- Drawbacks: Color options are limited to three
- Colors: Golden (the one I have), Coffee, Ebony
- Cost: $29.95 for 0.3-oz
Oceanly Highlighter
- My thoughts: Next to the blush, this is my second favorite Oceanly product. It’s great for a swipe of brightness on the cheeks or around the eyes.
- Pros: It can double as an eyeshadow!
- Drawbacks: There are only two color options
- Colors: Golden Rose (the one I have), Sunset Glow
- Cost: $29.95 for 0.3-oz
Oceanly Eyeshadow
- My thoughts: Anyone who likes cream eyeshadows should like these! When I do wear eyeshadow, these are a great option.
- Pros: Easy to blend and build using fingers or a brush
- Drawbacks: The color goes on pretty light at first, but you can build it up for deeper shades
- Colors: Shimmer finish: Pretty In Pink, Berry Bliss, Happy Hour and Cinnamon Stick Matte finish: Dusty Rose and Brown Sugar
- Cost: $24.95 for 0.16-oz
Oceanly Mascara
- My thoughts: The oils in the formula help it feel really nourishing and not at all flaky or drying.
- Pros: The lash serum formula both revitalizes lashes and adds volume.
- Drawbacks: The mascara is not waterproof
- Colors: Black, Brown, Blue
- Cost: $24.95 for 0.24-oz
Oceanly Lip Gloss
- My thoughts: I have not tried the lip gloss yet but I have a feeling I would like it because I do like the ATTITUDE lip balm!
- Pros: The tube is twistable (not push up like the other products)
- Drawbacks: A cardboard tube may not hold up as well in your purse over time.
- Colors: Silky Pink, Happy Berry, Ginger
- Cost: $19.95 for 2.1-oz
Oceanly Concealer
- My thoughts: I have not tried the concealer but I’m not sure I would like it as much as my favorite concealer. If I’m going to use a concealer I prefer that it is super smooth and almost liquidy so that I’m not rubbing underneath my eyes.
- Pros: Comes in the same six shades as the foundation. Twistable tube (like the lip gloss)
- Drawbacks: Only six shades is limiting.
- Colors: Cream, Dune, Nude, Caramel, Moka and Espresso
- Cost: $34.95 for 0.2-oz

Oceanly FAQs
Who is Oceanly makeup best for?
Oceanly is perfect for the makeup minimalist who also values clean ingredients. This is someone who prefers fewer products and a more natural look. Oceanly might not the top pick for someone looking for a high contrast, glam makeup look.
Can I take Oceanly products in my carry-on luggage?
YES! The beauty of these solid makeup products is that they are not restricted on airplanes like liquid makeup might be. One important note is to avoid extreme temperature changes to prevent any alterations to the formula.
What are the top 3 Oceanly products for the makeup minimalist?
As someone who does not wear a ton of makeup, my top 3 picks are the blush, the highlighter (can double as eyeshadow) and the mascara.
How do you use Oceanly makeup products?
Gently push up the tube at the bottom to allow the makeup to be available for use at the top. Cover with cardboard lid when not in use.
