Sustainable Fabrics That Make Great Pajamas
Personally, I’m quite picky about my pajamas. They need to be super soft and quite loose because I move around a lot at night. I also run hot so breathable fabric is key! Luckily, there are a few natural fabrics that are soft and breathable too. Plus, the natural dyes that are available these days mean that your sustainable sleepwear can be stylish too!
Here are my favorite sustainable fabrics for pajamas:
Bamboo Viscose – Quick-growing bamboo is used to make a fabric called viscose. The bamboo stalks are processed and turned into pulp, which is then turned into fabric. Bamboo viscose is such soft fabric that it is sometimes known as vegan silk.
TENCEL™ Lyocell – Similar to bamboo viscose, this fabric is made from pulp from the Eucalyptus tree.
Modal – Made using a similar process to viscose and bamboo, but using cellulose from beech trees.
Note about viscose, lyocell and modal fabrics: It is important that these materials are created in a closed-loop process, where water is recycled and all chemicals are removed. Both bamboo and eucalyptus are naturally grown fertilizer-free, but are not certified organic.
Organic Cotton – Unlike conventional cotton, cotton that has been certified organic has been grown and manufactured without the use of toxic fertilizers and pesticides.
Silk – Silk is a natural material made from the fibers of silk worms. It creates an extremely soft fabric that is breathable and hypoallergenic too.
Note: Some pajamas are made using recycled polyester material. While I’m all for recycling, this type of material is not as breathable as natural fibers, so therefore I don’t recommend it for sleepwear.
Certifications to Look for on Pajamas
Sadly, the fashion industry is known for having ethical issues surrounding the manufacturing of their products, including the use of child labor, not paying living wages and creating pollution and other environmental problems.
Third-party certifications can help you identify ethical companies, sustainable fabrics and non-toxic products. Here are the certifications to look for when you are shopping for sustainable loungewear and pajamas:
GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fabrics and fibers. Fabrics with this certification are ensured to use ecologically and socially responsible practices throughout every step in the supply chain.
OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 – The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 ensures that every component of a product, from the fabric and thread, to the buttons and other accessories have been tested for harmful substances.
Fair Trade Certified – When you see the Fair Trade Certified label, you know that the company is following fair trade practices like providing fair wages, safe working conditions and social development projects to help the communities producing their products.
Certified B-Corp – For a company to be a Certified B Corporation, they must prove that they are meeting rigorous environmental standards and sustainable practices, as well as showing accountability and transparency throughout their business.
Green Cotton – This is a Danish company that certifies organic cotton. It is not as widely recognized as GOTS.
