Sleep is important.

Now that’s the understatement of the year!

The truth is – sleep is essential to our wellbeing in every way – it effects our physical health, our mental functioning, our ability to fight disease and more.

One thing that’s critical for a good night’s sleep is a good mattress.

And not just any mattress – a high-quality, supportive mattress made from from safe materials that won’t off-gas harmful chemicals while you sleep.

Criteria for an Affordable Non-Toxic Mattress

There’s a lot to learn when you first start out on a mattress shopping journey! For starters, there is a huge range in the quality of mattresses on the market, ranging from super cheap mattresses, to high-end luxury mattresses that may not be worth the price. Buyer beware!

If you’re here at Mindful Momma, I’m assuming you are interested in a safe, non-toxic mattress, made from natural and organic materials and without any toxic chemicals added at all. And you’re likely a bit concerned about cost, because you know that a healthy mattress is a big investment.

I get you – and that’s why I’m here today to help you find the affordable organic mattress of your dreams!

Here are three things to look for when you are shopping for an affordable non-toxic mattress:

1.) Organic Mattress Materials

A truly healthy and safe mattress will be made using certified organic materials like these:

  • 100% GOLS* certified organic latex – Natural latex foam provides support, buoyancy and cushion for pressure points. Unlike a memory foam mattress, natural latex has good temperature regulation and will not make you sleep hot.
  • 100% GOTS* certified organic wool – Wool is naturally breathable and moisture-wicking so it helps keep you cool and dry while you sleep. Wool is also a natural flame retardant and is used instead of chemicals to meet Federal flammability standards.
  • 100% GOTS* certified organic cotton – Breathable cotton fabric is a great material for wrapping a mattress. Organic cotton ensures that pesticides and other chemicals were not used in the growing and manufacturing process.

*GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard)and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) are the gold standard for organic certification for latex, cotton and wool because it ensures the organic status of materials every step of the way, from farming to manufacturing, to finished product.

Materials that you DO NOT want in your mattress include: chemical flame retardants, polyurethane foam, toxic glues or adhesives, synthetic materials like polyester, formaldehyde or fiberglass.

2.) Made Safe Certified

An important way to ensure the safety of a mattress is to look for trusted certifications. One of those certifications is Made Safe. Made Safe is a non-toxic seal of approval that certifies a product to be free from any ingredients that are known or suspected to harm human health, animals, aquatic life, or ecosystems.

Made Safe’s scientific process screens all products for known behavioral toxins, carcinogens, developmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, flame retardants, heavy metals, neurotoxins, high risk pesticides, reproductive toxins, toxic solvents, or harmful VOCs.

Made Safe is considered the TOP certification for non-toxic products and very few brands have met their rigorous standards.

3.) Fair Pricing

A high-quality, organic mattress is going to be an investment – I’m not gonna lie! But it doesn’t have to break the bank. Fortunately, it is possible to find a really great mattress made with natural and organic materials that is also affordable.

When you are shopping for an organic mattress, one thing you don’t want to compromise on is quality, non-toxic materials. Don’t be fooled by greenwashing from brands that claim to sell natural mattresses but don’t have the non-toxic and organic certifications to back it up!

Just as with conventional mattresses, organic mattresses are available in a variety of price-points, from basic models to luxury mattresses. You’ll need to figure out which benefits match up with your budget, and choose from there.

Introducing the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress

What do you get when you combine all three of these criteria?

Organic Materials + Made Safe Certified + Fair Pricing = the Eco Organic Mattress from Avocado!!

The Eco Organic Mattress is a hybrid mattress, meaning that the support comes from a combination of natural latex and pocketed coils. It is a medium-firm mattress that is great for sleepers of all types (back sleepers, side sleepers and stomach sleepers), including kids. It is just slightly less firm than the Avocado Green Mattress.

The mattress is made with up to 988 8″ pocketed coils and 100% GOLS certified organic latex from their own sustainable farms in India and Guatemala. Construction also includes 100% GOTS certified wool and an organic cotton cover. The innersprings are crafted in Los Angeles from recycled steel.

The Eco Organic Mattress is also GREENGUARD Gold Certified and Formaldehyde Free Certified by the UL Environment, which means they have been scientifically tested to be free from any off-gassing from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, and phthalates.

Best of all, this Made Safe and GOTS certified organic mattress is sold at an unheard of price point of less than $1300 for a queen size.

How do they do it? By owning their own factories, as well as their own ethical wool and sustainable latex farms, Avocado is able to eliminate the middleman and offer direct from factory pricing.

The Eco Organic Mattress is best for people who:

  • Prefer a medium-firm mattress
  • Want ZERO flame retardant chemicals in their mattress
  • Want ZERO off-gassing smells
  • Need a formaldehyde-free mattress
  • Prefer certified organic materials
  • Are looking for the Made Safe Certification
  • Need an affordable mattress that is in the same price range as a polyurethane foam mattress

Pricing on the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress is as follows: (double check the website for the latest pricing)

  • Twin: $777
  • Twin XL: $899
  • Full: $1199
  • Queen: $1299

Want to give your new mattress a test-drive first? No worries – you’ll have a 100-night trial period. Plus the Eco Organic Mattress is covered by a 10-year limited warranty. Your mattress will arrive vacuum sealed in a cardboard box and is very easy to unbox.

More about Avocado Brands

The mission at Avocado is to be the most respected source for green mattresses, pillows and bedding at affordable prices, while maintaining environmentally conscious, ethical and sustainable business practices, to help safeguard your health and to protect the planet.

The company was founded by Jeff D’Andrea and his wife Alex after they went looking for a green mattress that they could actually afford. Instead they found greenwashing and a lack of transparency. They knew they could do better. So, along with three other business partners, Jeff founded Avocado in Hoboken, New Jersey in 2016.

Avocado is a Certified B Corporation, is Climate Neutral Certified, and is a member of 1% for the Planet.

Are you ready to get the healthy sleep you’ve been dreaming of? In my opinion, the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress is one of the best organic mattresses for your money. So if you are in the market for an affordable non-toxic mattress, I hope you will check it out!
