How to Improve Your Natural Beauty Routine
So what is a natural beauty routine anyway? I’m talking about the things we do to help our hair, nails and skin look healthy, beautiful and glowing at all times! Sure, some of it is hereditary, but you might be surprised at the impact that a healthy routine has on the condition of your skin, the thickness of your hair and the strength of your nails.
Here are 5 ways to boost your beauty routine naturally:
Eat Beauty-Boosting Foods
I could go on for days about the benefits of a good diet on your looks. As you may have guessed, a diet full of healthy real foods and low in sugar and processed foods is where the true beauty lies! On the other hand, a poor diet can lead to dull skin, dry hair and brittle nails that never seem to grow. For now, I’ll just highlight a few powerhouse foods known to boost your natural beauty from within:
Eggs – a great natural source of biotin, which helps strengthen hair & nails (read more about biotin below)
Berries – blueberries, strawberries and blackberries are all loaded with antioxidants including Vitamin C which helps build collagen and protect against skin-damaging free radicals
Cooked tomatoes – contain high levels of the phytonutrient lypocene, which has antioxidant benefits and helps protect skin from the sun
Salmon – contains anti-inflammatory Omega-3 fatty acids, which help avoid skin conditions like acne and eczema and also helps promote healthy skin and scalp
Almonds – another great source of biotin as well as magnesium and calcium for healthy hair and nails
Leafy greens – spinach, kale & chard are all sources of vitamins, minerals and Omega-3s that are needed for glowing skin and strong hair and nails
Sweet potatoes – and winter squash are rich sources of Vitamins A & C which combat free radicals and boosts production of collagen and elastin
Tip: Start your day with an antioxidant-filled smoothie made with berries, spinach and almond milk or one of my delicious sweet potato smoothies.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Hydration is crucial for healthy skin. Drinking a good daily supply of water will help keep your skin supple and smooth. On the other hand, dehydration leads to dry skin and wrinkles and we don’t want that! Your best bet is to drink water regularly throughout the day. If you’re looking for flavor, sipping on antioxidant-laden green tea, soothing herbal tea or unsweetented flavored mineral water will also do the trick (minimize the sugary drinks as sugar is not great for your skin). Don’t forget to hydrate the outside of your skin too by using a high-quality, natural moisturizer on your face and body.
Tip: A small squeeze of fresh lemon or lime makes water easier to drink.
Use Non-Toxic Skin Care & Cosmetics
This is a topic near and dear to my heart! With all of the excellent non-toxic skin care and makeup products available today – there is just no good reason to still be using conventional beauty brands. Traditional skin care and cosmetics products contain ingredients like parabens and other hormone disruptors – which affect you both inside and out. On top of that, petroleum-based ingredients like mineral oil clog pores and can interfere with the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins.
One of the many benefits of exercise is that it increases blood flow around the body. This blood flow helps carry nutrients to the skin and also helps carry waste products, including free radicals, out of skin. In addition, our bodies detox through perspiration, so getting sweaty is doing double duty for our looks! Studies have shown a connection between exercise and younger looking skin – so get out there and work up a sweat – whether it’s through a cardio workout, a hot yoga class or a quick run. A steamy sauna is another great tool for sweating out toxins.
Tip: If you can’t make it to the gym, a quick round of jumping jacks or crunches is always possible to fit in.
Supplement with Biotin
When we talked about food a little earlier, I mentioned biotin. Biotin is a B vitamin (also known as vitamin H or Vitamin B7), that is an important nutrient for healthy hair, skin and nails. While you can get some biotin in food, a supplement is a way to get a consistent amount of biotin in your system. Natrol® Biotin supplements support healthy hair growth, radiant skin and stronger nails.† Additionally, Natrol® Biotin helps convert food into energy, boosting your metabolism – and what’s not to love about that?†
I’ve been taking Natrol® Biotin for about a month and the main difference I notice is in my nails – which are growing faster than usual and are less likely to break. I actually have an excuse to put on nail polish now! What I appreciate about Natrol® Biotin supplements is that they are a great-tasting strawberry flavored tablet that dissolves quickly and is 100% vegetarian. No need for water – I can just pop one anytime!
You can find Natrol supplements online, and at many local stores like Walgreens, Costco, Sprouts and other natural food stores.
Tip: Keep a bottle of Natrol® Biotin at your desk or by your bathroom sink so it will be easy to remember to take every day.
