Keep in mind, this review of non toxic bakeware is for brands that I have personally tried and can enthusiastically recommend. I’ll share a few more brands at the end, some of which I have used myself and some that come highly recommended from friends or in reviews.

Stainless Steel Bakeware from 360 Cookware

360 Cookware makes bakeware from durable, food-safe stainless steel. All products are American made and come with a lifetime warranty.

Bakeware products include: cookie sheets, jelly roll pans, cake pans, loaf pans, pie pans and rectangular baking pans.

My favorite: I use the 9 x 13 bake & roast pan with handles for everything from fruit crisps to cakes to casseroles. It makes a beautiful serving dish too! I also just got the gorgeous loaf pan with handles and I’m looking forward to years of banana bread!

My favorite: I don’t have any specific bakeware items from Lodge, but we do bake sourdough bread in our cast iron skillet (similar to this one) and it works wonders for a crispy crust!

PROS

  • cast iron can withstand high heat and has great heat retention

  • super durable – will last forever

CONS

  • cast iron is heavy
  • not dishwasher safe
  • finish must be maintained periodically with oil

Best Bakeware Materials

Not all bakeware is created equal, and as you can probably guess, some materials such as non-stick PFAS chemicals or heavy metals can introduce harmful toxins into your food.

Fortunately, several safe and non-toxic options are available, including stainless steel, ceramic non-stick, 100% ceramic bakeware, and cast iron. I’ll break down the pros and cons of each type so you can make the best choice for your baking style.

Stainless Steel is a very durable material that is free from harmful coatings or chemicals. Its non-reactive nature means it won’t leach into your food, even when exposed to high temperatures. While it doesn’t have natural non-stick properties, using parchment paper or a bit of oil can easily solve this issue. Best for: cookie sheets, cake pans and baking dishes.

Ceramic Non-Stick bakeware is an excellent alternative to traditional non-stick options that often rely on Teflon or similar coatings, which can release toxic fumes at high temperatures. Ceramic non-stick surfaces are made from a mineral-based coating, ensuring they are free from PTFE and PFOA. These materials provide an easy release of baked goods and require less oil, making them a healthier option for everyday baking. Best for: muffin pans, loaf pans and cake pans.

100% Ceramic Bakeware is one of the safest choices available, as it is made entirely from natural clay and does not contain any synthetic coatings or metals. This type of bakeware is non-reactive, meaning it won’t leach chemicals into your food, and it can withstand very high temperatures. Additionally, its excellent heat retention and even heat distribution make it perfect for achieving consistent baking results. Best for: casseroles and baked goods.

Cast Iron bakeware is another great non-toxic bakeware option. Known for its durability and exceptional heat retention, cast iron is free from harmful coatings and can last for generations with proper care. While it requires a bit more maintenance to prevent rust, the effort is well worth it for reliable and chemical-free baking. Best for: bread, muffins and cakes.

Glass is a great material for baking because it is chemically inert, meaning it does not leach harmful substances into food, even when exposed to high baking temperatures. Glass bakeware also distributes heat evenly, ensuring consistent baking results, and is easy to clean, making it a safe and durable choice for healthy cooking. Best for: pies and casseroles.

Bakeware FAQ’s

Is non-stick bakeware safe?

It depends! A ceramic non-stick coating, like the one that Caraway uses is very safe to use. However, most non-stick coatings contain PFAS chemicals such as PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) or PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene, aka Teflon). These chemicals have been linked to cancer, elevated cholesterol, liver damage, endocrine disruption and other health issues. (source).

Beware bakeware that says “PFAS free” and check to see exactly what type of non stick coating is used before purchasing.

Is aluminum bakeware safe?

In general, aluminum bakeware is considered safe, but some people prefer to steer clear due to the potential for neurological problems from large amounts of aluminum exposure. Although the association with Alzheimer’s disease is unproven, some prefer to follow the precautionary principle and avoid direct contact with aluminum.

If you do choose to use aluminum baking sheets or other bakeware, using untreated parchment paper sheets or baking cups can keep food from coming in contact with the aluminum.

I personally use aluminum baking sheets for some of my baking, without worry. I sometimes use parchment paper and I avoid baking acidic foods like tomatoes as they can degrade the aluminum.

Is silicone bakeware safe?

Many people (including the FDA) consider silicone bakeware safe, but personally I am not a fan. A study from a European consumer organization found that concerning chemicals including suspected endocrine disruptors and carcinogens can migrate from silicone when it is heated.

Personally, I love my silicone cooking utensils and food storage containers
but have never tried any silicone bakeware products.
