Top Blogs for DIY Beauty Products
Mommypotamus
First of all, I love the name of this blog (and the kind of intense story behind it) but Heather the Mommypotamus has some awesome DIY beauty recipes to share. And they go way beyond your basic sugar scrub and lip balm. She’s DIYing things that never would have occurred to me.
DIY Natural Shaving Cream – Do you really need the chemical shaving foam? I don’t think so. This blend of shea butter and nourishing oils will give you the close shave you want and is much better for your skin.
DIY Hair Pomade – Fancy hair pomade can be SO expensive and who knows what’s in it. This one is made with all natural ingredients and is customizable with the perfect essential oils for your hair type.
Homemade Foundation Powder – Foundation made with cocoa powder? This I’ve gotta try!
Live Simply
Live Simply is a gorgeous blog for many reasons, the treasure trove of DIY Beauty recipes being just one of them. Founder, Kristin Marr has an ultra creative mindset and a talent for photography that make her DIY recipes stand out from the crowd.
Honey Oatmeal Acne Mask – A few simple ingredients from the pantry + a secret ingredient make this a smarter way to fight acne than most drug-store remedies.
Homemade Peppermint Toothpaste – Have you ever made homemade toothpaste? I’m super curious to try this. It contains a couple of ingredients I wouldn’t have guessed you’d find in toothpaste but none of the nasty stuff.
Simple Homemade Facial Astringent – Like the title says, this recipe is SIMPLE. And if you have oily skin, your face will love it.
Empowered Sustenance
Part of blogger Lauren’s healthy journey was to clear up her skin naturally – both through healthy eating and by making her own beauty products. Here’s just a sampling of what you’ll find on Empowered Sustenance.
Mint and Sea Salt Foot Scrub – Sounds like a mojito cocktail for the feet – and who wouldn’t want that?
DIY Honey Shampoo – Apparently honey is a great anti-frizz remedy (who knew?) and it also leaves hair super soft and wavy. Just be sure to make this recipe in small batches as it has no preservatives.
Two Ingredient Makeup Remover – I won’t give away what the two ingredients are – but trust me they are probably better than what you’re buying at the drug store.
Mindful Momma
Can’t forget me! I was doing DIY beauty long before I started this blog, because it was fun and affordable! Search through my DIY beauty recipes on the blog – plus you’ll find more recipes in my book Practically Green: Your Guide to EcoFriendly Decision-Making too.

Peppermint Orange Homemade Toothpaste – This clay based toothpaste contains only 5 natural ingredients.
Lavender Calendula Skin Balm – Beeswax gives this balm “sticking power” as it forms a protective barrier on skin, without clogging pores.
Homemade Whipped Shea Body Butter – So rich and moisturizing – your skin will drink it up!

I am just starting out making things and I wanted to know if there is a website or a book I could get that tells everything about ingredients like say for instance shea butter what diy products it’s good for and a list of benefits or say like propylene glycol what is usually used in like lotions or shampoo etc and what it does like for instance conditions or helps with dandruff or what ever it does and also other names for ingredients cause I have found out a lot of things also have other names and subsitions if a recipe calls for something and you don’t have it what else can you use in its place. Is there a website that would have information like this on all ingredients or at least most of them?? Please help I am so confused
Hi Rebecca – I know what you mean – it can be overwhelming to find all the resources you want and that you can trust! I actually have a great resource for you! My friend Stacy recently started a membership group called the Natural Body Care Club. It is loaded with resources including ingredient information, techniques, printable recipes and how-to videos!
