Commit to buying refillable green cleaning products as an eco-friendly alternative to buying cleaning products in plastic bottles.
For someone who has been making an effort to be kinder to the planet for many years, I realize that I have major room for improvement in one key area: the number of plastic bottles I bring into my home.
This year I’m making a commitment to reducing waste by making the switch to refillable green cleaning products instead of buying new plastic bottles every time.
Grove Collaborative for Refillable Green Cleaning Products
Grove Collaborative provided me with product samples for this post. I may receive commissions from purchases made through links in this article. Full Disclosure
At first glance, switching to refillable cleaning products doesn’t seem challenging, but a big part of it is the habit change. As a creature of habit I’m used to buying the same cleaning products over and over – whether I’m tossing it in my shopping cart at Target, or my virtual cart at Thrive Market.
Cleaning is not my favorite activity (is it yours?) so shopping for cleaning products becomes routine and something I hardly think about. Hence the pile-up of plastic bottles in the recycling bin.
But happily I now have a new partner to help me take my green cleaning efforts to a new level of sustainability. Grove Collaborative has mastered the art of refillable cleaning products by offering non-toxic cleaning concentrates and refill pouches, along with reusable glass bottles to be used over and over again.
Grove Collaborative is unique in that they offer monthly recurring shipments to help you keep those refills stocked – but you can also pause auto-shipments if you prefer to shop on an as-needed basis only. To be honest, I appreciate the auto-pilot because it helps me keep that refill habit on track!
Refillable Cleaning Sprays
If you were to start with one thing from Grove, I would recommend the Cleaning Concentrates (see below for how to get them for FREE!).
Mix the concentrated cleaning solution with water in one of Grove’s pretty glass spray bottles with a silicone sleeve and it’s ready to use. Now you’ve got your all-purpose spray, glass cleaner and tub & tile cleaner covered and you’ve already eliminated three plastic bottles!
Two things that are always sitting next to my kitchen sink: dishwashing soap and hand washing soap. Even though I’ve been buying the non-toxic brands, they still come in the dreaded plastic bottle.
This has changed now that I’m buying refill pouches of Gel Dish Soap and Gel Hand Soap from Grove. Use your own refillable bottle (my stainless steel pump dispenser is similar to this one) or buy a glass soap dispenser from Grove. Looks a heck of a lot better than plastic bottles, don’t you think? Plus the refill pouches contain 60% less plastic than a bottle of the same size!

Note: Now I realize that these refillable cleaning products are not zero waste solutions, because the refills do come in plastic pouches and tubes that can be hard to recycle. However, it’s still much better than buying a whole new plastic bottle each time. Reach out to Grove at [email protected] and they will email you a pre-paid return label so you can return your empties back to them whenever you are ready.
For me, the intersection of sustainability and convenience is where it’s at – and Grove Collaborative meets those needs!
P.S. Grove currently ships only to the lower 48 states and is not available for shipping to Hawaii, Alaska, Canada or any other international destination.
