Refillable Cleaning Products to Help You Ditch Plastic
Learn how to switch to refillable cleaning products so you can stop buying so many single-use plastic bottles and create a more sustainable home.
For someone who has been making an effort to be kinder to the planet for many years, I realize that I have major room for improvement in one key area: the number of plastic bottles I bring into my home.
Many of those plastic containers are for the green cleaning brands – the cleaning sprays, dishwashing soaps and hand washing soaps- that we use on the regular.
This year I’m making a commitment to reducing waste by making the switch to refillable cleaning products instead of buying new plastic packaging every time.

At first glance, switching to refillable cleaning products doesn’t seem challenging, but a big part of it is the habit change. As a creature of habit I’m used to buying the same cleaning products over and over – whether I’m tossing it in my shopping cart at Target, or my virtual cart at Thrive Market. Hence the pile-up of plastic bottles in the recycling bin.
But happily I now have a new partner to help me take my green cleaning efforts to a new level of sustainability. Grove Collaborative has mastered the art of refillable cleaning products by offering non-toxic cleaning concentrates and dishwashing and hand soap refills, along with glass reusable bottles to be used over and over again.
Grove’s products are made with powerful, plant-based, biodegradable ingredients and no synthetic fragrances, so there’s no need to worry about toxic chemicals in your cleaning products.
Refillable Cleaning Products – Cleaning Sprays
If you were to start with one thing from Grove, I would recommend the Grove Cleaning Concentrates. These are concentrated cleaning formulas that get mixed with water before use. Just pour the bottle of concentrate into one a glass spray bottle with a silicone sleeve, fill it up with water and you are ready to clean sustainably.
Grove Co cleaning concentrates are available for a multi-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, floor cleaner, daily shower bathroom cleaner and tub & tile cleaner. Or you can get a starter kit of three of the most essential cleaner concentrates. Just think about all that plastic waste you will eliminate when you stop buying those plastic bottles!
And no need to worry about any harmful chemicals in these cleaners. Grove Co products are formulated with plant-based, natural ingredients and a 100% natural fragrance using essential oils and plant extracts.
P.S. Skip the paper towels and buy reusable, microfiber cleaning cloths too!
Refillable Cleaning Products – Liquid Soaps
Two things that are always sitting next to my kitchen sink: dishwashing soap and hand washing soap. Even though I’ve been buying non-toxic formulas, they still come in the dreaded single use plastic bottle.
This has changed now that I’m buying refillable products from Grove. Grove offers refills of both dish soap and hand soap in recyclable aluminum bottles, instead of the typical plastic bottles.
All you need to do is pour the soap into a glass soap dispenser or a stainless steel pump dispenser and you are good to go. The reusable containers look a heck of a lot better than plastic bottles, don’t you think?
Refillable Cleaning Products – Laundry Detergent
If there’s one place where you’ll almost always find plastic, it’s that big plastic jug of laundry detergent in the laundry room. But it doesn’t need to be that way!
Grove offers their Ultra-Concentrated Liquid Laundry Detergent in low-waste plastic refill pouches that reduce plastic waste by 70%. Just refill their Auto-Dosing Liquid Laundry Detergent Dispenser and you can say goodbye to the big plastic jug!
