Why Switch to Organic & Non Toxic Sheets?
It always pains me to say that many of the products we buy for our homes and lives are not as safe as we think they are – either for our health or for the environment. This is even true of something as basic as the bed sheets you go to sleep with every night.
Let’s take a look at why this is the case:
1.) From a health perspective, your bed sheets may contain residues from harmful chemicals like pesticides, dyes, formaldehyde, phthalates and more. Some sheets are even infused with chemicals to make them wrinkle resistant or stain resistant. I bet you’d rather not have those things touching your skin!
2.) From an environmental perspective, your bedding may be a huge resource hog and involve environmentally destructive processes. Conventional cotton uses up 30% of the world’s pesticides and the chemicals used to process and finish it adds to the problem. Polyester is a type of plastic that comes from petroleum, a non-renewable resource.
3.) From a social good perspective, your sheets may have been produced using child labor or in a factory with unhealthy working conditions for its employees. Yeah, not something pleasant to think about, but it’s important to look for ethical bedding.

Pros & Cons of Organic Bedding
To make an easy comparison, I’ve put together some of the pros and cons of sheets made with organic and non-toxic fabrics vs. bedding made with synthetic fabrics:

Natural & Organic Fabrics for Healthy Sheets
These are the most safe and sustainable fabrics to look for in non-toxic sheets and bedding:
- Organic cotton: Certified organic cotton is grown without pesticides and using sustainable farming practices.
- Bamboo: Bamboo grows without pesticides and is a renewable resource that grows extremely quickly (up to 4 feet per day!)
- Viscose is the type of fabric produced from bamboo. It does involve resources and chemicals to manufacture, but care is taken to produce it in a sustainable manner.
- Look for viscose from bamboo that has been produced in a closed-loop process (which reuses water and chemicals used to process the bamboo).
- Bamboo is grown naturally, without pesticides, but it can not be certified organic.
- Look for Oeko-Tex certification for bamboo sheets.
- Eucalyptus: Sustainable eucalyptus fiber is used to create Tencel lyocell fabric. Similar to bamboo, eucalyptus fabric can not be certified organic but is grown without pesticides.
- Hemp: Hemp is a quick-growing plant that has has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties as well as being hypoallergenic. And don’t worry, hemp sheets are SOFT!
- Linen: Natural linen fabric comes from flax plants and is lightweight, breathable and very durable.
- Organic wool: Certified organic wool is used in blankets and fillings for comforters

Certifications for Non Toxic & Sustainable Bedding
Since most sheets and bedding do not go through any special testing for safety or evaluations of environmental or social impact, it’s important to look for independent certifications to guide you to the best bedding choices. Here are some certifications to look for:
- Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) – Internationally recognized as the toughest organic textile standard because it goes beyond verifying the organic farming process to include every step of manufacturing. Products must contain at least 95% organic fiber, use non-toxic dyes and not be treated with bleach, formaldehyde or any other toxic substances. Strict social and environmental standards are also required.
- OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 – A comprehensive, third-party testing and certification system for textile products at all stages of production. All components of a product are required to be free from a variety of harmful substances including formaldehyde, banned colourants, pesticides, heavy metals and more.
- MADE SAFE – A certification that ensures products are non-toxic. Products are screened for a wide range of toxins including behavioral toxins, carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, heavy metals and more. In addition, MADE SAFE goes above and beyond by lab-testing products for safety.
- GreenGuard Gold – Provides assurance that products designed for use in indoor spaces meet strict chemical emissions limits. Gold certification considers safety factors to account for sensitive individuals, such as children and the elderly.
- Fair Trade Certified – A product certification that promotes equitable trade practices, working with farms and factories around the world to empower workers and improve wages, benefits and conditions.
Best Brands for Organic Sheets & Non Toxic Bedding
In order to do a proper review of the best organic sheets, I received some product samples to check them out, but some of them I purchased myself.
But more than simply sleeping on these sheets, I did a lot of research to find out more about these brands – how the products are made, the certifications they have, and their commitment to making safe and eco-friendly products.
First, a few notes about bedding:
- Most sheets are made overseas, not in the U.S. (I’m guessing for cost reasons.)
- It is recommended to wash all new bedding prior to first use – which helps relax the fibers for a softer feel.
- Cold water washing is better for the environment and has been shown to be just as effective as hot water for cleaning clothes.
- Most sheet sets include a flat sheet, a fitted sheet and a set of pillow cases.
All of these organic and non-toxic bedding brands are made with natural fibers (most are certified organic) and other organic materials and produced without any harsh chemicals.
Coyuchi
Coyuchi makes thoughtfully designed bed, bath and home textiles that are both friendly to people and the planet.

- My take: I received samples of Coyuchi organic cotton sheets and a lovely duvet cover. The sheets are 200 thread count and are very well made. The nature inspired print is beautiful – by far the prettiest sheets I own! (shown in the top image in this post but this exact style is no longer available) The duvet cover is made from woven fabric that feels like a blanket and is backed with organic cotton percale, so you can use it with or without a top sheet.

We have not done anything yet to change our bedroom to eco friendly! Sheets would be the first thing I think we should change, as well as the pillows.
I run an air purifier in my room.
I was careful in choosing my new mattress because I wanted one without toxins.
i run an air purifier cause we have allergies and i run an oil diffuser and i wash the sheets every friday or sunday and thats it

I love my parachute sheets that are oeko-tex certified and super soft! My favorite is changing the sheets before bed then snuggling in with them all warm. I’d love to try some of these other brands too!
We run an air purifier, humidifier, and use organic cotton sheets. And we have laminate flooring instead of carpet.

I have been looking at organic sheets but currently don’t do anything to make it eco-friendly.
I guess my skin has become more sensitive as I’ve aged because I can’t take the heavily perfumed detergents anymore. I use cotton sheets (I haven’t tried bamboo yet) and I use detergents without perfumes, etc.
We use dryer balls and eco friendly products to clean.

Ouch! The cost of many of those sheet sets are beyond my budget! I do buy organic cotton but did not check further than that for fair trade, etc. Definitely something I can do for next time. I do look for bamboo but usually too expensive. I shop at Winners in Canada.

I have a natural latex topper on my bed and currently have the Threshold brand sheets from Target – they are super soft! I’ll have to check out the other brands. And I’m looking forward to getting a completely non-toxic mattress in a few years.

We have a few sets of organic sheets from Target. Also use allergy mattress protectors that zip and seal the non organic mattresses in. Unfortunately non toxic mattresses and most bedding are too expensive for us to afford.
Make sure stacks of papers don’t accumulate on my nightstand or piles of laundry on my chair. I am ruthless about what enters my room and organize what’s there. Recycle unnecessary papers. Donate unwanted or unused clothing. Give away excess bedding, too – homeless shelters are in need of gently used pillows, blankets, and sheets.
We switched to kapok pillows last year.

To make my bedroom non-toxic and eco-friendly, I use incandescent lightbulbs and have tile as my floor covering.
Switched to organic stuff for my home, and that includes bed sheets. I already have the bamboo sheets that I got from an online store. It’s not just organic, but really really comfy as well!!
