3 Organic Mattress Toppers For a Superior Sleep Experience

Discover the best organic mattress toppers to upgrade the comfort of your mattress for a safer and more luxurious sleep experience.

Best Organic Mattress Toppers

Looking to upgrade your mattress without actually buying a new mattress? An organic mattress topper is just the ticket!

While a new non-toxic mattress is a wonderful investment, it may not be in the budget at the moment. A mattress topper is more affordable and can provide a much appreciated comfort boost and help extend the life of your mattress until you are ready for that bigger purchase.

Why Invest in a Mattress Topper?

A mattress topper can be helpful for so many reasons – here are the most common:

  • Adds extra cushioning to a mattress that might be a bit too firm
  • Provides pressure point relief in places like the back, shoulders and hips
  • Reduces motion transfer when your partner moves around at night
  • Allows for better temperature regulation, especially with wool and latex toppers
  • Helps extend the life of an older mattress until you can afford a new one
  • Makes cheap mattresses on dorm beds or guest beds more comfortable
  • Provides a barrier between you and your conventional mattress to reduce the impact of off-gassing of VOCs and other harmful toxins in mattresses

Safest Materials for Mattress Toppers

It’s important to choose the right material for your topper because not all mattress toppers are created equal.

If you’re interested in a non-toxic mattress topper, you’ll want to avoid polyurethane foam and most memory foam (Certipur-US certified memory foam is OK but not my first choice).

Instead choose mattress toppers made from natural latex or wool, with an organic cotton cover.

  • Latex – Natural latex is sustainably created using the liquid extracted from rubber trees and can be certified organic by GOLS. Latex has a supportive, springy feel that is similar to memory foam but with less of a molded feeling. It is also much cooler than memory foam and is vegan.
  • Wool – Natural wool provides gentle cushioning (as opposed to bounce). It can be sustainably sourced and GOTS certified organic. Wool is also known for its temperature regulating properties, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Organic Mattress Topper FAQs

How do you use a mattress topper?

A mattress topper is placed directly on top of the mattress. Your mattress pad and fitted sheet go on top and wrap around the topper, keeping it in place.

What’s the best vegan mattress topper?

If you prefer vegan materials, look for a mattress topper made from natural latex as opposed to wool.

Are organic mattress toppers better for people with allergies or sensitivities?

Yes—Wool and latex are naturally resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew, making them ideal for allergy-prone individuals (unless of course you are allergic to latex or wool). Organic toppers are typically free from synthetic chemicals, flame retardants, and formaldehyde as well.

Do organic toppers have a smell or “off-gassing” period?

Unlike synthetic foam toppers which can off-gas harmful chemicals, organic latex and wool may have a mild, natural scent at first (like rubber or lanolin), but it usually dissipates quickly and is not harmful.

Do organic toppers sleep hot?

No—latex and wool are naturally temperature regulating. Latex allows airflow, and wool helps wick moisture, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter.

How long does a mattress topper last?

A high-quality topper can last 5–10 years, depending on the material and how well it’s cared for.

How do you clean a mattress topper?

Spot clean with mild soap and water and avoid soaking. Many toppers come with a removable, washable organic cotton cover. Always air dry and protect it with a mattress protector for longevity.
