A Special Gift Made with Repurposed Neckties

Gift made with Neckties
My mother gave me a very special gift for Christmas. A wall hanging made from repurposed neckties. But these weren’t just any neckties – they were my dad’s.My father passed away in March of 2011. He was a university professor and I’m pretty sure he wore a necktie every single day that he taught a class. He was traditional that way.

As you can see, an incredible amount of work went into this wall hanging. And my mom didn’t just make one of them – she made three! One for each of her 3 girls.

Necktie wall hanging
I’ve done some little crafts with neckties – like this necktie bag tutorial for my book that I posted on the blog awhile back – but I can’t imagine taking on a big project like this one. Isn’t it amazing?

This is a gift I will cherish forever. I vividly remember my dad wearing these ties and every time I look at the wall hanging, I think of him. Not many gifts have such lasting power.

Did you receive any extra special holiday gifts this season?

What a beautiful, thoughtful and creative gift. Is it quilted?

I’m afraid I don’t have a pattern LaVonne. My mother has since passed away as well so sadly we have no way to find out how she made it. I’m sorry for your loss – I hope you can find a way to repurpose your husband’s neckties.

This is such a beautiful idea, my dad passed away in 2005 and I’ve a collection of his ties I didn’t know quite what to do with them, I’m don’t sew but you’ve given me some food for thought now. Many thanks.

Thank you so much for sharing the men’s tie “potted plant”. It has inspired me to do something with my late brother-in-laws ties. He was an assistant DA in for our county. Most of his ties, suits and shirts were donated to young men who need to dress up for their day in court. I kept about 30 of his ties, but froze up on what to with them. Thanks again!
