What to Look For in Sustainable Furniture
For furniture to be considered sustainable it should be friendly to both people and the planet. This means that it should not be off-gassing toxic chemicals into the air that you are breathing, and the creation of the furniture should not be destructive to the earth either.
Here are some things to look for when purchasing sustainable bedroom furniture:
Solid Wood
Back in the day, furniture made from solid wood was a given, but surprisingly, most furniture these days is made from engineered “wood” products like particle board or fiberboard, or from wood laminates or veneers.
These engineered products are made from wood chips or wood fibers and bonded together with chemical resins or glues. Particle board is known to off-gas formaldehyde, which is linked to health problems, so it’s best to steer clear and opt for solid wood furniture whenever possible.
Sustainably Harvested Wood
Clearly solid wood furniture is preferred, but often harvesting wood comes at the expense of the planet. So, it’s important to look for furniture made with wood that has been sustainably harvested and preferably FSC®-Certified .
The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management worldwide. When you see this certification, you can be assured that the wood has been grown, harvested and processed in the most sustainable manner possible.
Non-Toxic Finishes
The paints, stains, varnishes and glues used on furniture are another source of toxic off-gassing that can have a negative impact on the air quality in your bedroom (remember, we want it to be a sanctuary, not an infirmary!)
So, when shopping for bedroom furniture, be sure to inquire about the types of finishes used, and make sure they only use non-toxic, odor-free glues and finishes that have zero-VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
