ButcherBox Review - sustainable & organic meat delivery service

When you are someone who cares deeply about health and the planet, like most of the readers here at Mindful Momma, you will probably find yourself becoming more selective about the meat you choose to feed your family.

If you’re going to eat meat, you want it to be nutrient-dense and also sourced in a way that is healthy for the animals and the environment. But as you may have found, it can be hard to trust the meat you are buying at the store, and you may end up shopping in multiple locations in order to find the meat that you feel good about.

These concerns are what lead to me try ButcherBox many years ago, and why I am still purchasing from them today. Whether you have never heard of ButcherBox before, or are curious to learn whether this popular, sustainable and organic meat delivery service makes sense for you, I’ve got all the details for you in this ButcherBox review post!

Is ButcherBox Worth It?

I’ve been a ButcherBox customer for many years now, and I can tell you with all honesty, I’ve been super impressed with the quality and selection of the meat! Most of all, I love having it stocked in my freezer, so I can whip up healthy meals for my family quickly and easily. It means I don’t have to shop around town, looking for the meat that I need for the week.

How much does Butcherbox Cost?

In terms of cost, ButcherBox pricing is higher than you’ll pay for conventional meat. But remember, this is NOT conventional meat. ButcherBox meat is high quality, organic, grass-fed and sustainably sourced. Depending on which package you purchase, you’ll pay anywhere from $4.50 to $5.37 per serving of meat.

ButcherBox bacon and organic meat delivery review

A typical ButcherBox order for me is heavy on the chicken, with a bit of pork and beef mixed in. Plus a package of bacon, because their uncured, sugar-free bacon is THE BEST!

Pro tip: Larger cuts of meat, like a whole chicken or a chuck roast tend to be the best value, in terms of cost per pound of meat. Also, be sure to check out their member specials because some of them a great deals!

The customer service at ButcherBox is great too. One time, a package of chicken arrived ripped open and they credited me for that product in my next order. Other than that, I’ve never had any problems with my orders.

So, in answer to the question – Is ButcherBox worth it? For me it definitely is! But don’t just take my word for it, here’s what a couple of my readers have said about ButcherBox:

Butcherbox Review: Pros and Cons

As with any purchase, it’s important to consider the pros and cons of buying your meat from ButcherBox. Here are a few things to consider:

Pros:

  1. Quality: ButcherBox prides itself on providing high-quality meat sourced from animals that are humanely raised, free from antibiotics and hormones, and often grass-fed or pasture-raised. This can lead to better-tasting and healthier meat compared to what you might find at a typical grocery store.
  2. Convenience: With ButcherBox, you can have a selection of meats delivered directly to your doorstep on a regular basis, eliminating the need to visit multiple stores or butcher shops to find the cuts you want. This convenience can save time and effort.
  3. Variety: ButcherBox offers a variety of meat options, allowing you to customize your box based on your preferences. This variety can include different cuts of beef, pork, chicken, and seafood, as well as specialty items like bacon and sausages.
  4. Sustainability: The farms and suppliers that ButcherBox sources its meat from follow sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, so you can feel good about your choices.
  5. Control: As a subscriber, you have control over the frequency and contents of your deliveries. You can adjust your preferences, skip deliveries, or cancel your subscription at any time, giving you flexibility and control over your orders.

Cons:

  1. Cost: The meat from ButcherBox does cost more than conventional, factory farmed meat that you would find at the grocery store – but that’s because it is higher quality and sustainably sourced. For some, the cost of ButcherBox may be prohibitive.
  2. Subscription Model: ButcherBox is a subscription model so you need to keep on top of your delivery schedule and selection. While this can be very convenient, it can be stressful for some.
  3. Limited Selection: While ButcherBox offers a variety of meat options, the selection may be more limited compared to what you could find at a specialty butcher shop or gourmet grocery store. If you have specific preferences or are looking for rare cuts, you may not find them available through ButcherBox.
  4. Packaging Waste: Because ButcherBox ships its meat in insulated boxes, there can be a significant amount of packaging waste associated with each delivery. While the company does offer recycling instructions for its packaging materials, some consumers may still find the amount of waste generated to be a concern.
  5. Delivery Issues: Like any subscription-based service, there is always the potential for issues with delivery, such as delays, missed deliveries, or damaged packages. While ButcherBox strives to provide reliable delivery service, these issues can still occur and may inconvenience some customers.

Butcherbox reviews FAQs

Here are some answers to a few more common questions about ButcherBox:

Is Butcher Box meat organic?

All ButcherBox chicken is USDA certified organic, Global Animal Partnership Step 3 (GAP 3) certified and free range. Learn more about the sourcing of ButcherBox meat.

Is Butcher Box cheaper than Costco?

It’s very hard to do a cost comparison of ButcherBox vs. Costco because the meat is not exactly the same and the pricing structure is different. Costco organic, free range chicken is pretty similar to ButcherBox from what I can tell. Costco beef is organic but not grass fed and finished. ButcherBox pork is Certified Humane and Global Animal Partnership Certified but Costco’s pork is conventionally sourced.

Is Butcherbox hard to cancel?

No worries, it is easy to cancel your ButcherBox subscription whenever you want to. You can also modify your billing date and the frequency of delivery easily. The company gives you a head’s up before shipping so you have a chance to make changes or skip a delivery if needed.
