“Don’t eat too many snacks or you will spoil your dinner.”
Yeah, yeah, that’s what my mom always said too. Times have changed though – and whether Mom likes it or not, we’ve turned into a generation of snackers. Snacks have come a long way from the Oreos, Doritos and other junk that provide no nutritional benefits whatsoever. Now we have whole aisles full of choices and while most of them are crap for nutrition, a small subset of them are better than you (or Mom) might think. When I’m heading down the snack aisle, I like to look for a healthier “Instead Of” option. Here are a few things I’ve discovered lately:
Instead of corn-syrup laden cereal bars try…..
A cross between a cereal bar and a granola bar, My Super Foods Granola Bites are soft, chewy and as delicious as a homemade cookie. Only they are much healthier than most packaged bars you find on store shelves. Made with whole grain oats, omega-3 rich flax seed, amaranth (the ancient super grain) and 17 vitamins and minerals, these little babies pack a nutritious punch and there’s no corn syrup in sight! My boys gobbled them up pretty quick – especially the Chocolate Chip variety. In fact the whole 4 bar package was gone in a jiffy. A great snacking solution for parents of toddlers and younger kids.

Instead of processed crackers and snacks try…..
With a mission to let you snack without guilt (yay!), NatureBox delivers an assortment of wholesome snackfoods to your doorstep every month. You may recognize the name because I’ve written about NatureBox before, but I want to share something special they have going on. Green living expert, Sara Snow has curated a box full of healthy goodies just for Mother’s Day. Can I tempt you with some Lemon Pucker Pistachios or some Peanut Butter Nom Noms?
Three words: To die for! If you haven’t tried TJ’s Sesame Honey Cashews yet, jump in your car and drive to your nearest Trader Joe’s and get your hands on some STAT! I don’t know where else you can get a sweet, salty and crunchy fix all in one bite without reaching for junk food.
Instead of traditional chips try….
Crunch, crunch, crunch. I’m such a sucker for “healthy” chips. Beanitos chips are made with real beans, rice and not much else. I munched my way through a bag of Simply Pinto Bean recently (not in one sitting, thankfully). I know chips are not a replacement for “real” food no matter how healthy, but man are they a nice, salty treat. Plus they are Non-GMO Project verified and certified gluten-free.
Way Better Snacks
Sprouting is the magic trick that makes Way Better Snacks as good and good-for-you as they are. What’s so great about sprouting? Sprouted (as opposed to whole) seeds, grains and beans provide more vitamins, minerals and healthy antioxidants, plus they are easier on the digestive tract. Sweeet Potato is the only flavor we’ve tried so far but we’ll be working my way through the varieties, no doubt.
