Healthy Food Blogs Worth Drooling Over

Nothing gets my mouth watering more than a plate full of healthy food.  Maybe it’s age, but I’m more likely to load up on a healthy meal and pass on dessert these days.  It’s not that I don’t love me a good fattening dessert because believe me, I do.  But serious cravings for things like sauteed greens, roasted beets and brown rice send me into a cooking frenzy.  Has this happened to you too?

A lot of my cooking inspiration comes from food blogs.  Most of the time, I’m not even looking for a recipe, but I check out the blogs for ideas, inspiration and new food combos.  Like mixing black beans with mango and cilantro or roasted carrots with honey, butter & apple cider vinegar. That kind of thing.

Would you like to see some of the food blogs I’ve been drooling over lately?

Sprouted kitchen

Sprouted Kitchen – The collaboration of a gal (Sara) and her boy (Hugh) who both have a major passion for veggies, Sprouted Kitchen is my go-to blog for healthy food porn.  I really do drool over the photos (taken by Hugh) and I love that they don’t just show the finished product, they showcase the ingredients and often include step-by-step photo instructions for making the dish. (I’d love to show you a photo or two here – but they keep them protected (smart move!) – so you’ll have to just go to the blog and see for yourself.)

Katheats Kath Eats Real Food – This lively blogger named Kath loves to talk about all things healthy.  Mostly food but other stuff too like exercise and life-in-general.  My favorite part of her blog is the Tribute to Oatmeal where she shares her special instructions for making extra creamy oatmeal and goes on to show us an amazing number of oatmeal variations including oatmeal with peanut butter, oatmeal with pumpkin and oatmeal with spinach, yep spinach!! (haven’t tried it yet but I’m awfully curious)healthy food blogs: herbivoracious

Herbivoracious – Seattle Dad, Michael Natkin whips up mouthwatering vegetarian meals for his family and is kind enough to share them on his blog.  His recipes really run the gamut….from Smoky Macaroni & Cheese to Chana Masala (spicy chickpeas) to these Crispy Polenta Cakes with Braised Cabbage & Beans.  Serious drooling going on here.

Dana treat spring risotto Dana Treat – Another Seattle vegetarian, Dana is a professional caterer and personal chef.  I dig her healthy recipes as well as her ‘treats’ (when she cooks for a family, she always provides a treat – how fun is that?) This Spring Risotto looks awfully good too.

Simply Sugar and Gluten Free – When I do get a craving for something sweet I prefer it to be healthier than the typical decadent dessert.  That’s why I’ve been stalking this blog for fabulous deserts made healthier.  Trust me, these Almond Butter Blondies are totally delish – even though they are sugar and gluten free!

Do you have any favorite healthy food blogs? Please share – there’s always room for more on my feed reader!

Nice blog roundup! I actually love reading healthy recipes also. But sad to say, I haven’t saved all the sites that I browsed. Anyway, thanks for sharing those sites. I might also check some healthy food recipes there.

Here is a great vegan oatmeal cookie recipe (my kids love them…and so do i)These cookies taste so good that you will find yourself with a new problem, convincing your friends, vegan and non-vegan alike, that there are no animal ingredients in them at all.

    To begin, the ingredient list:

1 and 1/2 cups of FLOUR. (Go for about a tablespoon less than this, actually. And I use organic flour).

    1 teaspoon BAKING SODA

    1 teaspoon SALT

    3/4 cup of CANOLA OIL

    2 tablespoons vanilla SOY MILK

    1 & 1/3 cups of UNREFINED SUGAR

2 EGG REPLACER EGGS [I use ENERG EGG REPLACER and have found this to work best. This can be found in most health food stores. One could also use any one of the following: soaked and drained flax seeds (soak flax seeds
for about an hour or two, drain the seeds out and use the remaining mush) , half a banana, tapioca starch with water or simply two tablespoons of water).

1 1/2 tablespoons VANILLA EXTRACT (yes, 1 and 1/2 tablespoons. Oh, and use the real thing, it does make a difference).

2 1/2 cups quick organic OATMEAL

12 oz. of organic, CHOCOLATE CHIPS (Tropical Source makes the best chocolate chips, in my opinion. They are organic and use unrefined sugar. You can also find these in most health food markets, or ask them to order them for you if they don’t).

Now, how to mix and bake them:

Heat your oven to 350 degrees.

Mix FLOUR, BAKING SODA and SALT together. Set aside.

Mix together the OIL and SUGAR. Mix until creamy.

Mix your EGG REPLACER well (this is very important).

Add the egg replacer mixture to the sugar/oil mixture. Add about a third of the egg replacer miture at a time, stirring it in a bit before adding the rest.

    Add the SOY MILK.

    Add the VANILLA.

Stir this mixture until it is a uniform color (this will not take long).

Slowly stir in the FLOUR mixture. Mix this well.

    Stir in OATMEAL and CHOCOLATE-CHIPS.

Place large tablespoons full of the batter onto an ungreased cookie sheet (an air filled cookie sheet works best, as the air between the two layers of the sheet keeps the bottom of baked items from burning).

Bake the cookies for about 9 to 13 minutes (ovens vary in temperature). Check them by gently pressing on the top of one of the cookies (BE CAREFUL! The chocolate-chips become like molten rock when cooking. I have burned myself more than once on a hot chocolate-chip). If the inside looks moist, but not too wet, they are probably done. It might take you a couple of tries to get the time down, so bake only a few at a time when starting out. Do not, I repeat, do not expect to see them turn slightly brown when done cooking. Without real eggs, they will not get that dark. They will, however, turn a golden tan.

When they are done, remove them from the oven and allow them to sit on the sheet for about a minute or two before placing them on a wire rack. Be careful with them as they tend to be quite delicate until they have cooled.

You will find that they do not melt down exactly like cookies made using animal ingredients, but neither you, nor anyone else will be able to taste the difference; IF you make them correctly.

Very cool. Can’t wait to try some new ideas. I have just started a blog for the cyclists that I coach. The big issue for a lot of my clients is that they want healthy food but don’t want to spend too long in the kitchen preparing it. So I’m striving to provide healthy and relatively quick preparation recipes that are also a good fit for families. http://www.blog.breakawaytrainingonline.com.

Thank you so much for the gluten-free and sugar-free blog! I just recently found out about my severe allergies to dairy and wheat as well as my intollerance/sensitivity to sugar and caffeine and have been feeling quite deprived. Now I can go look on her blog and substitute soy milk for regular (or nut milk whenever I try it) and have ideas for food for me! THANK YOU!

I have been following your blog for a month or so and have picked up some good data as well as enjoyed the way you’ve got structured your site. I am trying to run my own weblog but I think its too normal and I want to focus more on smaller topics. Being all issues to all folks just isn’t all that its cracked as much as be.

I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The design look great though! Hope you get the problem solved soon

Eating healthy does not mean that you are concerned with your age, but actually there are a lot of teenagers and even youngsters who prefer nutritious food to junks. Being healthy does not imply an age bracket. Everyone of us, needs to be fit and healthy to go through the day- to-day challenges of life.
