What is a Fizzy Toilet Bomb?

Fizzy toilet bombs are like a bath bombs for the toilet. Drop one in water and it starts to fizz while dissolving and releasing its active ingredients. Unlike a bath bomb, which delivers moisturizing oils for your skin, a fizzy toilet bomb is made with odor neutralizing, disinfecting and stain busting ingredients that help clean and freshen your toilet bowl even without scrubbing.

3 Reasons You Need to Make Homemade Toilet Bombs

One of the easiest ways and best first step to creating a healthy, non-toxic home is to make the switch to green cleaning products. Maybe you’ve already switched out your cleaning sprays or laundry detergentBut have you tackled your toilet yet?

Here’s how DIY toilet bowl cleaner tablets – aka fizzy toilet bombs can help you out:

Reason #1: You Don’t Clean the Toilet Very Often

Be honest. How often do you actually clean your toilet? I can tell you it’s not very high up on the priority list for me! Yet when you think about it, the toilet should probably be at the top of the list given what goes into it. Homemade toilet bombs come to the rescue by freshening your toilet in-between cleanings.

Reason #2: More Maintenance Cleaning = Less Scrubbing

Just looking at my toilet brush makes me cringe. I don’t even want to think about the germs that thing must harbor. Fizzy toilet bombs mean less scrubbing because the fizzing action powers the ingredients to help dissolve stains. Which means you can ignore the brush a little longer!

Reason #3: Natural Ingredients Beat Toxic Chemicals

Traditional toilet bowl cleaners are one of the most toxic cleaning products in your homeHomemade toilet cleaning bombs are made with non-toxic ingredients including baking soda, citric acid, hydrogen peroxide and essential oils. No need to worry about toxic fumes or skin-burning chemicals when you use them. I think you’ll agree that this natural, DIY toilet cleaner is a great way to save money and avoid the use of harsh chemicals!

(FYI – my favorite non-toxic toilet cleaner is Ecover Pine Fresh Toilet Cleaner.)

Ingredients for DIY Toilet Bombs

Fizzy toilet bombs are made with just four low-cost, simple ingredients. You’ll need baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, citric acid and some pure essential oils.

Baking soda – Baking soda is a natural mineral that is a mainstay in most kitchens, but it has superpowers in the world of cleaning too, due to it’s ability to neutralize odors and dissolve hard water stains.

Hydrogen peroxide – Hydrogen peroxide is a naturally produced liquid known for its bleaching and disinfectant properties. You can use the same hydrogen peroxide you keep on hand for first aid.

Citric acid – Citric acid is a naturally occurring acid that works as a disinfectant and cleanser. It’s also the ingredient that creates the all important fizz! You can buy citric acid in bulk at many co-ops or natural food stores or find citric acid on Amazon.

Essential oils – The pure, natural essences distilled directly from plants are known as essential oils. Not only do they provide a lovely, all-natural fragrance, the majority of essential oils have antibacterial properties, making them perfect for household cleaning. Some of the more popular essential oils for cleaning include lavender oil, eucalyptus, lemon, orange, grapefruit, pin and tea tree oil – but you can feel free to use your favorite essential oils.

How to Make Fizzy Toilet Bombs

Homemade toilet bombs are very easy to make. Follow along with these simple DIY instructions.

Ingredients for toilet bomb recipe

My favorite essential oil to use for fizzy toilet bombs is eucalyptus but peppermint oil or lemon essential oil are also good for freshening the toilet.

Ingredients for fizzy toilet bomb recipe

Mix the baking soda and citric acid together in a small glass bowl. Slowly drizzle in the hydrogen peroxide, drop by drop. Some bubbling will occur but just keep mixing, you don’t want too much premature fizzing to happen. Another option is to put the wet ingredients into a spray bottle and slowly spray the liquid onto the dry ingredients, while mixing.

Next, add the drops of essential oils and continue to mix until everything is well blended.

Press the mixture into silicone molds. If you don’t have silicone molds, you can use bath bomb molds, ice cube trays or press the mixture into a teaspoon to shape and place on a plate to dry.

How to Use Toilet Bombs to Freshen Your Toilet

Toilet bombs are super easy to use. Store your fizzy tablets in a glass jar or airtight container on or near the toilet. Note to parents: keep out of reach of small children. These DIY toilet bombs could be mistaken for candy so don’t leave them out if you have small kids around.

Homemade toilet fizz bombs

Once or twice a week, I will toss 1 or 2 toilet fizzies into the toilet bowl after flushing! Let them dissolve on their own – there’s no need to flush again until the next time the toilet is used.

Toilet Bomb FAQs

How long do toilet cleaner bombs last?

As long as they are kept in a sealed container, they should stay fresh for at least a couple months. After that, the essential oil fragrance will probably fade, although the fizzing reaction will probably still occur.

My toilet cleaning bombs got puffy after putting them in the molds. What should I do?

Oh my – the mixture probably either had too much liquid or it was a humid environment that added more moisture. I recommend trying again with less liquid – or try using a spray bottle to add the liquid instead of mixing it in directly. Meanwhile, save the “ruined” mixture and use for scrubbing the sink or bathtub – the ingredients are still great for cleaning!

What essential oils work best for toilet fizzies?

Any essential oil that has antibacterial properties will be great for this DIY recipe. A study in PubMed showed that the essential oils that were most effective against bacteria include lemongrass, eucalyptus, peppermint and orange oils

Can I use the same baking soda I use for cooking?

Yes, there’s no need to purchase a “special” type of baking soda – it’s all the same! Good old Arm & Hammer will do the job just fine!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • cup citric acid
  • 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide
  • 30 drops essential oil eucalyptus, peppermint, lemon or lavender

Instructions

  • Mix baking soda and citric acid together in a bowl. Slowly drizzle in hydrogen peroxide, mixing as you go. Slowly add the essential oil, mixing constantly. The mixture will bubble and fizz a little bit but that is OK. Another option is to put the wet ingredients into a spray bottle and slowly spray the liquid onto the dry ingredients, while mixing.
  • Press the mixture into silicone molds. Make sure the mixture is packed into the molds tightly. Let the molds dry for at least 6 hours or overnight.
  • Push bath bombs out of the molds. Store in a sealed container. Keep away from young children who may think they are edible.
  • Toss 1 or 2 toilet fizzies into the toilet bowl after flushing. Let them dissolve on their own – there’s no need to flush again until the next time the toilet is used.

Notes

After some feedback from users, I have included a range for the amount of liquid in this recipe – both for the hydrogen peroxide and for the essential oils. If you have a humid environment in your home, you may need to stick with the lower amount of liquid. In dry environments, the higher amount of of liquid will be best.

  1. Super cute idea – and very easy to make! I love the thoughtfulness of the concept.

What an incredibly great idea. Very cool write up, but you must be part chemist.

    1. LOL – yes, I think I am part chemist with all the crazy concoctions I make around here!

  3. 5 stars
That’s a nifty little homemade cleaner! I have all ingredients except for the citric acid. Can we substitute it with lemon juice?

    1. No – citric acid is a powder not a liquid. The lemon juice would not work as a substitute I’m afraid!

  4. Jane Nicolo says:

I am thankful that your blog is all about enviro-friendly/non-toxic cleaning products. Thanks for the fizzy recipe! I am going to try it!

  5. That is a very interesting idea! I wonder if it would work on hard water stains! Sometimes, I leave regular toilet bowl cleaner in the toilet for a long while before scrubbing, but this might mean I can skip scrubbing occasionally! 🙂

    1. Yes, I think baking soda helps dissolve hard water stains!

  6. Donna Silverberg says:

I am definitely going to make these!

I wonder if using the generic of “oxy clean” would be better than the hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide turns into plain water when it is exposed to air. Just sprinkle with water to help them mold together.

  8. I tried these out today. I mixed and mixed and mixed them packed tightly and left them to dry. An hour has passed and the fizzers are three times the size they were and are super puffed out. What did I do wrong?!

    1. Oh no – I’m so sorry to hear that. I’m guessing they either had too much liquid or it was a humid environment that added more moisture. Hope you can try again with less liquid and have a better outcome!

  9. Terry Links says:

Hi Micaela, are these toilet bombs safe for septic systems?

    1. I certainly would think so! I don’t have a septic system myself but I doubt that baking soda, citric acid and essential oil would be a problem!

  10. Mine was a big mess! They overflowed and kept bubbling up and growing no matter how much I mixed. ☹️

    1. Oh no, I am so sorry that happened to you. It sounds like you had too much liquid in the mixture.

  11. How often do you use these? Once a week?

    1. You can use every day if you want – but once a week is good too!

  12. Wow! I added Wild orange to mine and they just keep swelling! I pushed them into molds and they keep growing! Has anyone else tried these with citrus oil? I will not do that again!

    1. I had the same thing happen while using lemon oil and lavender oil. I’m thinking I may had gotten too much peroxide in them because I used a tablespoon worth. It’s fairly humid in my house at times too. I like the lavender/lemon smell so I think next time using less peroxide may help? Worth a try 🤷🏻‍♀️
