Kids: Join Team ENERGY STAR and Take Action to Protect the Planet

Join Team Energy Star

Liam with his “adopted” polar bear

My 8 year old son Liam has been learning about climate change in school. Now he is on a mission to save the polar bears! He even made a donation to the World Wildlife Fund to “adopt” a polar bear. I’ve talked with him about all the little things he can do to reduce his personal contribution to climate change (and try to stop the polar ice from melting). Things like turning off the lights when he leaves the room, shutting the refrigerator door quickly and biking to soccer practice instead of driving. Even though individual actions like that may seem tiny, I think it’s important to make sure kids realize that they do play a part in protecting the climate.

Have your child share their story

One way to help inspire your child to take action, is to have them join Team ENERGY STAR. Joining gives you access to energy saving tips and fun activities that will help motivate your family to save energy in the home and in your daily lives. Right now, kids can even share their story for a chance to win some fun prizes from LG Electronics, 20th Century Fox and PTO Today.  The first 200 families to submit an energy-saving story will receive 2 tickets to see the movie EPIC, courtesy of Fox.

An EPIC fight

Climate change is no small deal. To help draw attention to this EPIC issue this summer, ENERGY STAR has partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency, PTO Today (a national nonprofit that helps independent parent-teacher organizations) and the producers of the new, animated film EPIC to get the word out to more kids than ever before. The goal is pretty simple: to teach kids to save energy while still having fun. I’m willing to get on board with that!

The movie

EPIC looks like a pretty awesome movie. My kids are excited to see it when it comes out (in theaters May 24th). Here’s a little bit about it:

EPIC is a 3D CG adventure comedy that reveals a fantastical world unlike any other. From the creators of ICE AGE and RIO, EPIC tells the story of an ongoing battle between the forces of good, who keep the natural world alive, and the forces of evil, who wish to destroy it. When a teenage girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she teams up with an elite band of warriors and a crew of comical, larger-than-life figures, to save their world…and ours.

Liam joined Team ENERGY STAR! Will you?

Disclosure: I am writing about Team ENERGY STAR because I support the program and because I believe it is important to educate the public about energy efficiency and climate change. Read more about the program on Big Green Purse. I have received a small “thank you” reward from LG, an ENERGY STAR partner, in appreciation for my post. That gift in no way influenced my opinion.)
