Self Care Practices That Will Bring Out the Best in You

Simple self care practices that are easy to fit in and allow you to be your best self.

Simple Self Care Practices and Why They Matter

Let me guess. From the minute that alarm clock goes off in the morning and you stumble groggily out of bed, you are all about doing things for other people.

Packing lunches. Walking the dog. Getting that report done for work. Making dinner. Driving to lessons or sports events. Helping with homework. Picking up the house so you can start all over again tomorrow.

Not much time for YOU in that crazy schedule, now is there?

But what do we get when we do everything for others and nothing for ourselves? Extreme crabbiness, lack of focus and quite possibly serious depression.

I’m speaking from experience here. In typical supermom style, I’ve run myself into the ground by doing everything for my family and nothing for myself. I know what it’s like to work until I drop and then feel the dread of waking up to do it all over again.

The Importance of Self Care

Look, I know what you’re thinking. Self care? Who are you fooling? I don’t got time for that! But here’s the thing.

Self care is not selfish – it’s the lifeline you need to be your best self.

Self care is about giving yourself the support you need. Allowing yourself the breaks you deserve. Paying attention to your body, mind and spirit. Loving yourself enough to help yourself.

The small amount of time you devote to self care will mean:

  • reduced stress
  • less burnout
  • improved relationships
  • increased productivity
  • contentment and happiness

I’ve learned the hard way that ignoring my needs is not good for me or my family.

By practicing self care you will better serve your family and others in your life.

Self care doesn’t have to take a lot of time. In as little as 10 minutes you can do something that will meaningfully impact your day.

I encourage you to fit in one or more of these simple self care practices each day – your loved ones will thank you for it!

Keep track of all the good stuff you’re doing for yourself using my free weekly self care checklist. You’ll find it in my resource library – subscribe here for free access (if you are already a subscriber, just log into the resource library and you’ll find it there!):

Practice yoga

Whether you take a class at a studio, or sneak some in at home, any amount of yoga is good for your body and your soul. When I feel sluggish, yoga brings me energy. When I feel anxious, child’s pose is a perfect escape.

Learn how to meditate

Meditation has been a real game changer for me. I use the Headspace app, which offers a FREE Take 10 program to get you started. I took it and was hooked! As much as I would love to meditate every day, I only get to it about 3-4 times per week for 10 minutes at a time. But even that small amount has helped calm my wild and crazy brain so much – I highly recommend meditation!

Start journaling

Writing in a journal is a helpful way to work through anxiety, process news and express gratitude. Keep a journal wherever you find handy – whether that’s next to your bedside, in your purse or at your desk – so it’s ready for you when you need it.

Connect with friends

It’s easy to let friendships slide when you are over your head with a busy life – I know, I’ve done it. Friendships are a lifeline to the outside world –  a source of personal connection and a much needed break from daily life – so make the effort to keep them strong!

Simple Self Care Practices

Be creative

You may think you don’t have time for a hobby – but it very well could be a sanity-saver. So pick up that knitting, play an instrument, take a drawing class, sew a snack bag – do something to unleash your creative mind!

Self care should include a little luxury every once in a while. Maybe it’s a relaxing bath after the kids go to bed. Perhaps treating yourself to some pampering beauty products. Or take time for a massage or my favorite spa treatment – a facial!

Get moving

The endorphins you get from physical activity are like a free non-prescription drug. Whether you hit the gym, take a bike ride or go for a fast paced walk, exercise will calm your mind as it rejuvenates your body. For me, barre class is my bliss! It doesn’t really matter what you do, just get moving!

Simple Self Care Practices

Eat well

When you are stressed and unhappy, it is so easy to transfer those feelings to the food you eat. Junk food will only make it worse. For me, cooking delicious, healthy food is a form of self care. So is a daily glass of my homemade kombucha. Even if you don’t have time to cook, try to eat mindfully and as healthfully as possible – it will feed your body and your mind!

Pick up a book

Reading is my go-to escape before bedtime. After I’ve plugged in my phone (outside of the bedroom), I pick up my real book (I know – less eco-friendly but I use the library and share books with friends), and read to relax. Even a short break reading a favorite magazine can do you good!

Give yourself permission to step back from your crazy day and fit in some of these easy self care practices. You’ll notice a difference, I promise!
