Seriously? It’s back-to-school time again? I’m always amazed at how fast the summer goes. Ours has been action-packed and I can hardly believe there’s only 2 weeks left until school is back in session. Meanwhile, my boys have outgrown most of their clothes, my youngest needs a new backpack, we have lost some of our lunch-packing supplies and of course we need to work our way through the dreaded school supply list (why is there always SO much on there?)
Sounds like it’s time for some back-to-school power shopping!
Fortunately, MightyNest, an online shop for green and healthy products, has got me covered. MightyNest carries a super selection of waste-free lunch gear, kid-safe bags and backpacks and natural arts & crafts supplies that are all carefully researched to be both non-toxic and high-quality. It’s like one-stop shopping for back-to-school (except for the clothes)!!
I have been working with MightyNest for a couple of years now and I was thrilled to meet Annie – their social media queen at BlogHer a couple of weeks ago. Such a sweet gal!! Annie kindly sent my boys some reusable lunch gear to get them pumped up for the new school year. Knowing that my boys are getting older (8 and 13 years), she sent products in basic blue colors (see top photo) instead of cutesy, little-kid styles but be sure to check out all the adorable younger-child gear they have! Here’s what they got:
There’s no need for ice packs with this insulated lunch bag by Packit. Instead you store the whole bag in the freezer until you’re ready to pack it up with food! It’s a perfect size (8″ x 10″ x 5″) and is tall enough to include a water bottle. And of course it is free of all the usually yuckies like PVC, BPA, phthalates and lead. I think this bag will be very well used in our household! Price: $19.99
My oldest son prefers leftover dinner food over sandwiches for lunch. This stainless steel, vacuum insulated container by Hydro Flask is just the ticket! It is made of food grade, 18/8 stainless steel with a durable, matte finish and a heavy-duty plastic lid. The double-wall, vacuum insulation technology keeps hot foods hot and cold foods cold and has a lifetime warranty. We have the 12-oz size, which is just right for us but they also make a 17-oz size if you want something larger. Price: $23.99
Also by Hydro Flask, this good-looking bottle is made of vacuum insulated stainless steel, which is naturally resistant to bacteria and odors. I love the larger mouth opening and the hole in the top for easy carrying! Available in a bunch of fun colors for $21.99 each.
Forget the disposable, plastic utensils! This reusable, bamboo utensils set is made from durable but lightweight solid bamboo (no glue!), and includes a fork, knife and spoon as well as a set of chopsticks. Everything is packaged in a groovy little cloth pouch so it’s easy to keep everything together. A set like this is not only fun for the kids – it’s perfect to keep at the office! Price: $12.95
These handy, reusable snack bags – are a staple item in our lunch-packing supplies. Made of cotton fabric and lined with food-safe nylon, SnackTAXI bags can be used over and over again, keeping tons of wasteful plastic baggies out of the waste stream. You can wipe ’em clean easily but throw them in the washing machine when they need a more thorough washing. My boys prefer the plain colors at this point but be sure to check out all the fun fabric designs! Price: $7.95
